ROHM Group company LAPIS Semiconductor has recently announced the availability of 32bit microcontrollers ideal for data loggers used in logistics for acquisition and management of environmental information during package shipment.

The ML630Q464/466 are the first ICs in the industry to integrate all major functions required for data logging (USB, high-speed clock generation, LCD driver, high-accuracy RC oscillation type AD converter), data acquisition (i.e. temperature, humidity, acceleration), data display, and PDF file generation on a single chip.

In recent years rising concerns about the safety and security of foods and medicines have expanded the use of logistics systems to maintain cold temperatures (cold chain) without interruption, from production to transportation and consumption, particularly for perishables and pharmaceuticals. Consequently, in the logistics industry it will be necessary to manage the transportation environment that affects package quality – namely temperature, humidity, and shock/vibration. This is expected to increase demand for management tools such as data loggers by more than 10% per year.

For data loggers, which are typically attached to packages and in many cases disposable, it is important to reduce both size and cost by utilizing smaller batteries along with fewer parts. In addition, operating guidelines such as FDA*1 regulations on cold chain and GDP*2 require reliable recording of package conditions during transport and the output of uneditable PDF files to prevent tampering of records (log data).

In response, the ML640Q464/466 provide PDF file generation and integrate key functions for USB data logging on 1 chip while leveraging LAPIS Semiconductor’s expertise in low power consumption, high noise immunity, and high performance. These new MCUs utilize an ARM Cortex M0+ 32bit CPU core to achieve high performance with low power consumption. Log data can be easily converted to PDF in about 4 seconds and operation is enabled for up to 380 days*3 using a single coin battery. In addition, the products inherit LAPIS Semiconductor’s robust noise immunity, making it possible to achieve stable operation even under severe conditions.

LAPIS Semiconductor strongly supports IoT solution suppliers in supply chain and logistics with comprehensive reference design using LAPIS Semiconductor’s advanced low power technology based high performance MCUs and wireless communication LSIs.

1. All major USB data logger functions integrated on one chip, reducing board space by 30% These ICs incorporate all major features required for USB data loggers, including USB I/F, high-speed clock generator, LCD driver, and high-accuracy RC oscillation type AD converter (ADC).

The ADC provides a temperature measurement accuracy of ±0.5℃ using only a thermistor and resistor/capacitor, unlike typical temperature measurement circuits consisting of a temperature sensor, thermistor, and reference voltage generation circuit. This reduces board space by 30% over conventional solutions.

In addition, higher performance is achieved by utilizing an ARM Cortex M0+ CPU core and incorporating an optimizedPDF generation program within the IC that makes it possible to create a single A4 page PDF file with 2,500 measurement points in roughly 4 seconds. Also, combining the customer’s AES encryption program with the built-in AES function and random number generator allows users to generate password-protected PDF files.

USB data logger operation is roughly divided into two parts: (1) reading and recording sensor data at specific intervals and (2) generating a PDF file when USB connection is established at the end of use. However, standby current consumption will have a dominant effect on battery life, since most of the time the data logger is in a dormant state.

2. Providing high performance and low power consumption enables operation for up to 380 days with a single coin battery

These new MCUs achieve a best-in-class standby current consumption of 0.8uA by supporting 4 low power modes. As a result, operation for up to 380 days is achieved utilizing a single coin battery (CR2032) with just 1/3rd the capacity of conventional batteries required for MCUs used in typical data loggers. 3. Optional USB Data Logger Reference Kit helps customers accelerate development A reference kit is provided that supports the development of data loggers using the ML630Q46x. In addition to hardware information such as circuit diagrams and parts lists, the reference kit includes various software code for operating the USB flash memory and generating PDF files, all necessary documentation, and usage methods for power management and the high accuracy RC type A/D converter that facilitate understanding of MCU operation and accelerate customer development.

To protect important log data (for verifying package quality) against external noise these new MCUs inherit original low power consumption and noise immunity technologies adopted in LAPIS Semiconductor’s ‘Tough Low Power’ MCU series.

This milestone represents a significant step towards Australia’s Hobart Class Destroyers joining the Aegis International fleet.

ADELAIDE, Australia, March 13, 2017 – A team of Lockheed Martin engineers and technicians, working with the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance team comprised of the Department of Defence, Raytheon Australia, Navantia and ASC Shipbuilding, recently completed five weeks of Sea Acceptance Trials aboard the future HMAS Hobart, first-of-class of Australia’s three new Aegis-equipped Air Warfare Destroyers.

The primary focus of these trials was to test and verify the ship platform and its ability to support the combat system, including demonstration and test of the Aegis combat system operations across multiple warfare areas in an at-sea environment.

The Aegis combat system at-sea testing was successfully conducted by the Hobart Integrated Test Team (ITT), which includes Lockheed Martin engineers and technicians from Australia and the U.S. supporting the Commonwealth and the AWD Alliance team.  The team is responsible for testing the Aegis combat system to ensure the equipment is properly installed and functional.

“This is yet another significant milestone for the Commonwealth and for the Aegis combat system aboard Australia’s first Hobart Class destroyer, capable of simultaneously defending against advanced air, surface and subsurface threats,” said Jim Sheridan, Lockheed Martin vice president of Naval Combat & Missile Defense Systems. “Having these three destroyers with the Aegis combat system provides Australia with new game changing capabilities to address modern threats.”

The Aegis Weapon System is a centralised, automated, command-and-control weapons control system that was designed as a total combat management system from detection to engagement. ​Boston FC chairman encourages others to have regular eye tests to help spot the silent thief of sight


A Lincolnshire grandfather is praising his local Vision Express store for helping to identify suspected glaucoma during a routine eye test.

Boston resident and chairman of the town football club, Michael Vines first noticed a problem with his eyes while struggling to read his newspaper in February last year.

Thinking he needed a new prescription for his reading glasses, the married 67-year-old made an appointment at Vision Express Boston, where he has been a customer for four years.

Retired agricultural contractor Michael, said: “At my last visit to Vision Express I was referred to the hospital to see a specialist as I had possible signs of glaucoma, but everything was ok. I was told that I am at risk of the condition as my mum had it and was advised to keep an eye on it.

“As soon as I realised I had to keep going to the window for better light to read my paper for the horse racing, which I enjoy quite a lot, I thought I’d best get checked out again.”

Although Michael had no other symptoms, such as blind spots or tunnel vision, following his eye test the Vision Express optometrist made him another referral to see a consultant.

Michael added: “I’d got it into my head that I had cataracts and would need an operation. Then at the hospital, the test results looked like I had a growth which was frightening.”

Michael was diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma in his right eye.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions in which the optic nerve is damaged where it leaves the eye, resulting in misty and patchy vision and a gradual loss of sight. It is one of the main causes of sight loss globally, affecting 64 million people worldwide and 600,000 Britons.

While the damage caused by glaucoma is irreversible, treatment and regular monitoring can help slow or prevent vision loss, especially if detected in its early stage.

Michael said: “I was actually relieved when I got the glaucoma diagnosis because I know it can be treated. I remember my mum using the drops and even though glaucoma can’t be cured, there are other treatment options for me and it was caught early. I was just pleased to get to the bottom of it.”

Michael was prescribed a lifelong treatment of eye drops, which he will use daily to lower the pressure in his eye and help retain useful sight.

“The first drops I had made me so poorly it was unreal,” Michael commented. “I had nose bleeds every other night, my teeth were playing up and gums hurt when I ate. I felt drowsy and just didn’t want to get up but after changing to different drops, I had no problems.

“The drops are just part of my everyday routine now and are helping; they don’t sting or cause blurriness – it’s a small price to pay rather than go blind.”

The grandfather-of-six will also have regular hospital check-ups and eye tests to monitor the progress of the condition.

As a school run driver for his son’s local taxi firm, Michael says he relies heavily on his sight and is grateful to Vision Express for helping to determine his diagnosis. He said: “I wouldn’t have even known there was a problem with my eyes if I hadn’t have had an eye test at Vision Express.

In addition, the AML’s open, “plug-and-play” architecture was upgraded to extend the system’s ability to integrate with existing ground architectures. This open architecture allows additional new software and hardware to be integrated in a matter of hours.

The AML, a modified Gulfstream III business jet, provides a readily reconfigurable platform to rapidly explore how multiple sensors and onboard systems interact, and how to best apply them for use in military and non-military markets. A variety of features onboard the aircraft enable this experimentation. Equipped with a multitude of sensors (electro-optical/ infrared systems, synthetic aperture radar, electronic intelligence and communications intelligence) and various communications apertures, the AML also has an open architecture that eases sensor interchangeability, a radome on the belly of the aircraft with ample volume for a mix of sensors, four onboard workstations and a computing capability that supports most commercial operating systems.

Beyond traditional uses such as development and evaluation support, this robust intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) lab can be deployed anywhere in the world with a minimal support footprint. Since its introduction in 2009, the AML has more than 4,000 mission hours providing “ISR as a Service” supporting real-world customer missions.

Sikorsky Offers Continued Support for Commercial Black Hawk Operators


Commercial operators of surplus U.S. Government UH-60A Black Hawk aircraft can receive safety information, maintenance assistance, and support for spares and repairs.

DALLAS, March 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) company, remains committed to serving the growing technical and logistical support needs of more than 30 commercial operators who have acquired surplus UH-60A model helicopters from the U.S. Government.

Sikorsky held an annual meeting with commercial Black Hawk operators during Heli-EXPO, the world’s largest helicopter trade show and exposition organized by the Helicopter Association International. The show runs from March 6 to 9 in Dallas.

“Integrating one or more medium-lift military helicopters into a commercial fleet as a business-generating asset can be a daunting proposition for many operators,” said Dina Halvorsen, Sikorsky’s director of aftermarket business development. “We are continuing our outreach to this growing Black Hawk community to welcome them into the Sikorsky family, to better understand their support requirements, and adapt accordingly our response with the appropriate levels of expertise that will ensure safety of flight.”

Since 2014, commercial operators have acquired approximately 140 UH-60A aircraft at auction from the General Services Administration — the U.S. Government’s clearinghouse for surplus goods. Federal Aviation Administration regulations restrict use of military surplus platforms to a limited set of utility operations, such as firefighting with a water bucket, and precision lift of heavy objects.
